For my Graphic Communications class, we were assigned to create and develop a unique organization that was based off of something that we were interested in but did not have any knowledge of. So I chose the topic of Southern Barbeque, which was something I was dying to learn. This challenge forced me to go out and research to understand what Barbeque means to the folks of the South. What I learned from talking to the experts and the lovers of BBQ, was that investing in the smokers, the tools, and the ingredients was very expensive. So using this information, I based my organization around the idea to provide the necessary tools and knowledge to the members who were interested in learning how to make good barbeque. After creating the brand manual to establish the aesthetic of the organization, I looked more into the needs of the members who were passionate about barbeque. The main need of the users was a sense of community within the barbeque world, so I developed the Kindling app to provide a fill to this void. It provides information about recipes, news, BBQ spots and the next meeting. All of these elements create a talking point for members in the upcoming meeting, which in turn allows for a more tight knit community to form. This project is still in the works and I hope to start this organization next year.
